Mixed media is a type of art that combines different types of materials and techniques to create new compositions. It’s in the name. Different mediums to create different effect. You can use metal, plastic, wood, paper, resin, polymer clay, fabric and any material available to you. It is a versatile way of creating, as it allows the artist to use as much or as little of each material, to finally develop their own style. In my case I use anything that speaks to me and put them together in an assemblage in order to create a three dimensional piece. Years ago I started experimenting with just a few materials. I used metal charms and wooden decorations alongside fabrics like hessian. Over the years I began feeling more confident to start broadening the range of materials I used. I watched videos and read how to use polymer clay and resins, and I learnt how to combine them with all the other materials I use on my art, while also learning by making mistakes what to avoid.

I created this canvas by using layering techniques and many different materials to build the final product. You don’t need to have alot of materials. You just need a canvas or a box or whatever you want to create on. Paints, just a two or three colours are enough. You can you acrylics, watercolours or oils. I use acrylics on my art, and it is the medium I am most comfortable using. You also need a few bits and bobs, depending on the type of mixed media you want to make, and of course, don’t forget your own imagination. Have fun with it, feel free and experiment!!!!
